Prevention
Yellow Fever is not effectively treatable but is preventable through vaccination. Travellers visiting at-risk regions may need a single-dose injection for protection.
Countries At Risk
Yellow Fever is present in tropical regions of South America, sub-Saharan Africa, and West Africa.
Almost all affected countries mandate proof of Yellow Fever vaccination, typically in the form of an International Certificate of Vaccination, for entry. Failure to present a valid certificate can result in quarantine, immunisation, or refusal of entry to the country.
Travel Precautions
The likelihood of contracting Yellow Fever depends on factors such as vaccination status, destination, intensity of Yellow Fever transmission in the area, travel season, duration of stay, and activities involving potential exposure to mosquitoes.
Signs and Symptoms
In the initial phase of Yellow Fever presenting in 3-6 days of being bitten, individuals may experience symptoms like fever, muscle pain, headache, chills, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting. After three to four days, most patients show improvement, with symptoms resolving. Some patients may transition to a more severe stage of the illness, marked by jaundice, hemorrhagic fever, and kidney function decline. Unfortunately, some individuals die to this form of the disease within 7-10 days of symptom onset.
